How To Win the Novel Writing Game using Best Seller Metrics

Bestseller Metrics - Structure

Elaine Ash

Bestseller Metrics is a patent pending system of diagnostic testing for novel manuscripts. It is the basis for BESTSELLER METRICS: HOW TO WIN THE NOVEL WRITING GAME.

Well-structured novels get published and win awards. Structure is a cornerstone of novel writing craft; it showcases your story in the way agents, editors, publishers and readers understand best.  This workshop will teach you the language and elements of structure; hook, plot point, plot twist, midpoint, climax and denouement. Spend an interactive afternoon as Elaine Ash leads you on a “structural walking tour” through Harry Potter, Bridget Jones's Diary, The Hunger Games, Kill Shot and more.

Discover how length changes the structure of epics and sagas. Elaine uses the nearly 700-page long A Game of Thrones: A Song of Fire and Iceas a prime example, and reveals how George R.R. Martin “accomplished the impossible.” Highly prized but rarely taught, structure is key to success in all genres. Don't miss this important workshop!

You will learn:

  • Why three-act structure is ground-zero for every novel
  • Why a well-structured novel is prized by movie scouts and producers
  • how to expertly deconstruct any novel to reveal its frame
  • How bestselling authors “do it”
  • How to tune up the structure of an existing manuscript
  • How to structure a novel from scratch

Workshop Leader : Elaine Ash

Elaine Ash edits fiction writers—from established authors to emerging talent. As the former editor-at-large for Beat to a Pulp webzine, Elaine worked directly with writers of all genres to develop stories for publication. Some of those writers went on to fame and fortune such as recent Edgar nominee Patti Abbott (Polis), Jay Stringer (Thomas and Mercer), Chris F. Holm (Mulholland), S.W Lauden (Rare Bird), Kieran Shea (Titan), Hilary Davidson (Macmillan) Sophie Littlefield (Minotaur, Delacorte) and many more.

Today, she works with private clients, helping them shape manuscripts, acquire agents and land publishing deals. She also ghostwrites and edits for industry clients. Among the titles Elaine has edited and produced, Walking the Dunes with Tennessee Williams is especially notable. A first-person memoir by the late Mia Elkovsky Phoebus, it fills in a small piece of history from 1940, when Mia shared a ramshackle house with America’s great playwright, Tennessee Williams (The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire). Distribution is through Walmart, Barnes and Noble, Amazon and many other outlets.

Under the pen name “Anonymous-9,” Elaine’s crime fiction is included in numerous “Best of” lists every year. Her work has been praised by T. Jefferson Parker, Ray Garton, Johnny Shaw, Douglas Lindsay, Josh Stallings, Robert Randisi and many others.

In 2009, Spinetingler magazine named Hard Bite Best Short Story on the Web. The same year, Anonymous-9 received two Derringer nominations from the Short Mystery Fiction Society, and a Thriller Award nomination from a first-round judging committee of the International Thriller Writers. In 2012, Hard Bite the novel received a Readers’ Choice Award from The House of Crime and Mystery (Canada) and was named one of the Top 5 Debut Novels of 2013 by Book People/ Mystery People. The sequel, Bite Harder, won another Readers’ Choice Award.

She appears, teaches, and speaks at the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society, Sisters in Crime, the Mystery Writers of America, the Coffee House Writers’ Group, and more.

Her latest book, Bestseller Metrics: How to Win the Novel Writing Game is more than a book, it is also a patent pending system currently in software development for the publishing industry.
