What YOU Need to Know to Get Published
(In today's highly competitive market)

An Intensive Masters Workshop
with Literary Agent Steven Hutson

Today’s publishing environment offers unprecedented opportunity for new writers to make their mark. New business models and whiz-bang technologies make it easier than ever, to get a book on the market. Great!

But there is the part that most writers never think about: As we crank out more and more new titles than ever, the pool of retail buyers remains unchanged. (How many books can you read in a year?) Today’s market is more competitive than it has ever been, and far too many new authors rush in without educating themselves.

If you seek guidance in Internet chat rooms and message boards, you’ll find a pile of bad advice from angry people with no credentials. They want to turn you into a victim, by making you suspicious of everyone and everything. You might have had a bad experience with an agent or editor, but they’re not responsible for the success of your career. You are.

You’re not just writing a story; you’re running a business. The industry hasn’t changed as much as you think. Self-publishing is not the liberating experience that you expect. And you might be looking for love in all the wrong places. In this three-hour interactive workshop, we will examine the workings of the publishing industry. Why do some books succeed, while so many fail? Bring your questions, your thick skin, and your hard-learned lessons.

We will discuss:

  • The market
  • About submissions
  • About literary agents
  • Things writers say (and why they shouldn’t)
  • Protecting your work (Copyright)
  • Self-publishing
  • How No to be a victim!
Morning Session 9:30 am - 12:30 Tuition $ 99-129

These interactive Master Classes are limited in size, so you receive a maximum amount of individual attention in a workshop environment. Get personal attention on your work and career-- insight you will not receive anywhere else!

Workshop Leader : Steven Hutson

Steven Hutson is a native of Los Angeles, a child of the sixties, and a storyteller almost from birth: poems, articles, business letters, advertising copy, and lame excuses. (He’s convinced that the Wimpy Kid books are based on his childhood, but he can’t prove it.) But like most writers, he kept a day job; in-between gigs he found gainful employment as a clerk typist, vitamin buyer, waiter, forklift operator, lifeguard, bookkeeper, grocery manager, printer’s apprentice, and meat cutter. He majored in business at Los Angeles City College, and had two books published.

One thing led to another, and Steve established his business in 2005; he edited hundreds of books on every subject from Bible study to yoga to credit repair. He managed a writers’ conference for several years, and mentored hundreds of aspiring authors. Finally, in early 2011, he branched out as a literary agent. He has placed his clients’ works with Dutton, Hachette, Tyndale, HarperCollins, Potomac, David C. Cook, Praeger, Writer’s Digest Books, and others. Several clients have won prestigious awards for their works.

Today he speaks often at writers’ events and writes two blogs. Swimming, gardening, and cooking keep his hands busy in-between. He lives in sunny Southern California with his wife Ruth and son Bradley.

Steve is interested in representing a wide range of fiction and nonfiction books for children and adults. Please no erotica, poetry, short stories, or picture books.
